Brundibár by Hans Krása

Conceptual design of Opera for film
Director: Brad Caleb Lee

References

I was interested in creating a whimsical, higgldy piggldy world which suited the musical tones and lyrics of the opera.
The references I gathered were mostly from early 20th-century food advertisements and Hollywood’s golden age, for their exaggeration and almost salivating nature, alongside cramped, quirky towns and merchants.

Initial Collage

My design process started with combining the references into clumps and heaps, and looking for the right shapes and sizes to tell the story and shape the locations, in an absurd and comedic way. Paper and Photoshop

Initial Sketching

After finding the feeling of the world, I looked for the characters that inhabit it, first through hand-drawn sketches and then through Photoshop renderings

Finalised renderings and technical drawings

Made using Photoshop, AutoCAD, and VectorWorks

In the Burning Darkness by Antonio Buero Vallejo

Conceptual design for the stage

Deciphering the Play

Written under the strict censorship of Franco’s regime in Spain, the writer used layers of metaphors to hide the true meaning of his text. Esher and I were searching for ways to uncover the festering wound of secrets and shame within the play

Tests in the model

Searching together for the shapes and scenes, and storyboarding the play. Working with real model parts and Photoshop renders to express the changes in mood and scene, as most of our chats were online

Character and movement design

We were drawn towards athletic and totalitarian use of the space, with costume design inspired by cults and children’s uniforms

Model making

To achieve the natural look of the grassy hill, I used natural fibers, threads, and paint brushes, dyed in different shades of green and yellow. As the shapes were natural, I used paper, card, and PVA to create the shape of the hill
